There’s new legislation on the line to reinstate rent control in Michigan, which poses a critical threat to property owners and tenants in our neighborhoods. We need your support to dispute it!
Know the Risks
Rent control will reintroduce housing concerns for our entire community. Here’s why:
- A study led by Stanford and UC, Berkley economists found landlords treated by rent control in San Francisco reduced regulated rental housing by 15 percent. Units were converted or redeveloped. The total supply of rental units dropped 14 percent in Berkeley and 8 percent in Santa Monica following the enactment of rent control.1
- The quality of rental properties diminishes as improvements and modernizations are deferred.
- Housing providers will become less likely to invest in the purchase of rental properties, leading to a limited supply of affordable housing.
- Rent control leaves our more-vulnerable neighbors without adequate housing options, defeating the purpose of rent control altogether.
